Trombonist
Howard
has ben a member of the East Winds Symphonic
Band since September of 2007. He has been playing trombone
since 1994. He started playing while at South
Vienna Elementary School in South Vienna, Ohio and continued to play
through high school and then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music
degree in June of 2006 from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio
where he studied both tenor trombone and bass trombone with Mr.
Francis H. Laws. At Wright State University, Howard
performed in several musical groups including the Wright
State University/Community Trombone Ensemble and the Wright State
University Wind Symphony. One highlight of his time
in the Wind Symphony was when the group toured and performed in the
areas of Matsusaka and Kyoto, Japan during June of 2004.
Howard also performed bass trombone in the Ohio Valley British Brass
Band from October of 2005 through June of 2006 which he notes as one of
the most enjoyable periods of time in his playing career thus
far.
Howard has had many musical influences including his
parents. His father, Colvin, is a professional horn
player who plays in the Springfield Symphony Orchestra in Springfield,
Ohio and is Professor of Horn at Wittenberg University which is also
there in Springfield. His mother Carol was a music
teacher. He notes his greatest influence was Mr.
Laws whom he studied with in college
Outside of trombone performance, Howard was employed by
Johnstonbaugh’s Music Centers here in Pittsburgh from August
of 2006 through June of 2007. Currently he work for
Three Rivers Optical, which is an eyeglasses manufacturing company
located near Crafton, PA working with their lens inventory as
well as assisting in mailing and sending out their completed orders at
the end of each business day. There he is
also involved with Project Teamwork which is a group of people who do
things to foster teamwork amongst the employees such as organizing a
company picnic and giving gifts out at Christmas.
In his spare time (which isn’t often due to work and
time spent with trombone practicing), you can find him listening to his
fire department radio scanner, which is always tuned to the frequency
for the Penn Hills Fire Departments, since he live in Penn
Hills. He also enjoy watching TV shows such as COPS
and America’s Most Wanted. Howard
is also enjoying helping out as a member of the the Three
Rivers Community Band Festival committee!!
